Welcome to 2nd grade!
We are getting into our 2nd grade routine. The students are doing a great job working together as a class and getting to know each other. We enjoyed sharing 3 items about ourselves and sharing how we got our name. It is fun to get to know more about our classmates.
The children are doing an excellent job building stamina with reading to self. I am very proud of how well they are engaged with their work! They love to read and work on their reading skills!
I hope you are listening to your child read daily for 20 minutes or more. It also helps build vocabulary when a child hears a book read to them, that is a year or two above his or her own level. I hope you can find time to enjoy books together this way, too. I will be sending home your child's reading level next week. Please make sure your child reads books in the correct reading level.By reading aloud, your child can work on the fluency and you can listen for correct pronunciation and ask comprehension questions. Your child is to list the books they have read for the month. The list is due at the end of the month. I will choose at least two books for your child to take an Accelerated Reading quiz. If your child would like to take an AR quiz before the end of the month, he or she can bring in the book or write down the exact title of the book. Please also continue to read aloud to your child. The more your child reads and is read to, the stronger reader he or she will become. The first reading log will come home early September and will be due September 27.
In Fundations, we reviewed skills from 1st grade. On Monday, Fundations homework will come home and is due by next Thursday. We will take our first spelling quiz on next Thursday.
We had fun creating our "Math about Me" person. We filled in information about ourselves that are related to numbers. The adorable math students are decorating our classroom. The students started to work in My Counting to 1,000 book and looking for patterns in numbers on number grids. Starting next week the students will have Math homework. Math homework will come home during the week and is due the next day. Starting next week, a weekly math packet homework will come home every Monday and will need to be returned by the following Monday. The first packet will be due on Tuesday, September 3 due to Labor Day. The children can return it sooner if they wish. I do give a whole week to complete the packet. I know how busy the evenings at home can be. Please also get into the daily routine to practice addition and subtraction math facts for about 10-15 minutes.
Thank you for checking the daily planner. It will have the homework assignments and any other information that you will need to know. Please read the planner, sign it every night, and return it the next school day. The planner will come home Monday-Thursday. I will not send it home on the weekend!
Also the Scholastic book order is due September 5. If you want to order books, please order online and I will place the class order this Sunday. Thank you!
I hope you have a great weekend!
